Huawei Confirms 6G Research at Ottawa Lab

On August 13, 2019, Huawei confirmed that it was researching 6G technology in its Ottawa laborayory and currently in talks with Canadian university researchers for joint development of next generation networks.  The shift to 6G research comes as 5G technology leaves the lab and hits the global market, freeing up company resources for research into new technologies. The early move toward 6G has worried some observers, noting that, in the wake of pushback to its 5G activities, Huawei may be even more determined than before to develop the lead position on the next generation of this technology.  Despite the Canadian connection to Huawei’s 6G development, the Canadian government has not yet taken a definitive approach on rules related to the roll-out of 5G (including as it relates to Huawei).
